Typical price range
A national survey of homeowners who mitigated found an average cost of about $2,700, and most systems fall between roughly $2,500 and $3,500. Prices vary from home to home, so the only way to know your exact cost is an on-site assessment by a certified professional.
What affects the price
- Foundation type: a full basement with a concrete slab is usually the most straightforward. Crawlspaces may need a sealed membrane, which adds cost.
- What's under the slab: gravel lets air move easily, so one suction point may be enough. Clay or compacted soil may need extra suction points or a stronger fan.
- Pipe route: running the pipe through a garage or up an exterior wall can be simpler than routing it through finished living space.
- Radon rough-in: many newer homes already have a capped radon pipe through the slab, which can lower the cost. See radon in new homes.
- Sealing work: sump pits, floor drains and large cracks may need sealing as part of the job.
- Finished basements: working around finished walls and ceilings can add time.
Running costs
A radon fan runs continuously and typically draws roughly 20 to 90 watts, so electricity costs are modest. Fans eventually wear out and need replacing, and a long-term retest every few years is a good idea to confirm the system is still working.
Rebates and tax credits
From time to time, Lung Saskatchewan and the Government of Saskatchewan have offered rebates or tax credits that can cover part of the cost of radon mitigation. Programs change, so ask your installer and check current programs before you book.
Is it worth the money?
Radon mitigation costs about the same as other common home repairs, like replacing a furnace or air conditioner, and it protects your family's long-term health. A home with a working system and a documented low radon result can also be reassuring to future buyers.
